We’ve been long-time fans of the IoT (Internet of Things) and
the opportunities it presents for cable operators, and based on articles from FierceCable and Engadget
– which reference a white paper by our own Susan Crouse – it looks like others
are starting to take notice.
Most consumers use set-top boxes to control their TV viewing
experience, but what about other devices? With this gateway device
already in place, cable operators can easily offer services that connect
everything from your dishwasher and your thermostat to your security cameras.
Rather than downloading a new smartphone app to manually control
each IoT device in one’s home, cable boxes could well provide a connected
landscape where IoT devices can talk to one another without human interaction. This
solution will revolutionize the smart home, further setting cable operators
apart from competition who don’t offer an IoT hub.
These articles echo what we’ve known all along:
that cable boxes will become the singular hub to connect the smart home.
