Alticast Appoints John Carlucci President of North American Operations

Cable Industry Veteran Guides Alticast to Greater Success in the Growing North American Cable Market

Alticast, a global partner for the delivery of media entertainment, has promoted its CTO John Carlucci to the newly created role of President of Alticast North America. With more than two decades worth of experience in the cable industry and over 20 patents to his name, Carlucci is widely recognized as an expert in the digital television field and will continue to serve as Alticast’s CTO in addition to taking on the duties of President.

For three years Carlucci has been Alticast’s CTO, playing a key role in the development of the company’s products and solutions.  A pioneer of next-generation user experiences, Carlucci’s work includes Emmy Award-winning, industry-leading designs for both Start Over/Network DVR and switched-digital video (SDV) applications.

“John was the obvious choice when we decided to create the position of President” says Alticast CEO Won Cheol Kang. “His experience, track record of success and outstanding technical expertise make him ideal to serve both as President and CTO and to drive Alticast to even greater achievements.”

Carlucci previously worked for Time Warner Cable (TWC) as the Vice President of Engineering for Polycipher, where he led the cable industry joint venture’s engineering department. Through this he developed security standards and infrastructure for next-generation video networks as well as architected “everything-on-demand video systems” for cable.

Bill Helms Joins Alticast to Lead Continued Product and Technology Innovation

Alticast, a global partner for the delivery of media entertainment, announced today that Bill Helms has joined the company as Chief Architect and Senior Vice President of Technology. As a cable industry veteran with more than 30 patents to his name, Helms brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to help Alticast continue innovating new products and applications for delivering increasingly interactive, multiscreen TV Everywhere services.

Helms joins Alticast from Time Warner Cable (TWC) where he spent more than a decade as the operator’s Vice President of Subscriber Engineering and Technology.  At TWC, Helms was responsible for leading the specification and development efforts of architecture, applications and services for the company’s video product line as well as overseeing the entire development process of the equipment used by TWC subscribers for video, data and telephony.  Among his many notable accomplishments at TWC, Helms led the internal engineering teams responsible for the launch and integration of the TWC navigation application into over 10 million STBs and was also the lead technical representative on the Downloadable Conditional Access System (DCAS) joint efforts with Comcast and Cox Communications.

Prior to his tenure at TWC, Helms held numerous technical positions with Scientific-Atlanta, DiviCom and Harmonic.  In his new role, he will report into John Carlucci, Alticast’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

“Over his 20 plus year career, Bill has earned a well-deserved reputation in the industry as a leader who can innovate and solve problems across the video service provider and supplier community,” said John Carlucci, CTO for Alticast. “Bill’s technical and business expertise, especially when it comes to understanding complex consumer, technology and operator trends, makes him an excellent addition to the Alticast team where we continue to pioneer industry-leading solutions.”

Time Warner Cable and Humax Team Up to Keep RDK Moving Forward with an Integrated IP Set-Top Box

Time Warner Cable (TWC), one of the leading cable operators in the U.S. has announced plans to start development on the cable giant’s first IP set-top box. The set-top box, which will be developed in partnership with Humax, one of the world's largest manufacturers of digital set-top boxes and an organization Alticast has collaborated closely with in the past, will leverage the popular RDK software bundle and also feature TWC’s new HTML 5 cloud-based navigation guide.
The announcement is the most recent move in the ongoing effort to promote RDK as the cable industry’s dominant, unifying platform. Last year, TWC and Comcast announced their RDK joint venture to support widespread implementation of the standardized software bundle so that it will eventually become the industry standard. Alan Breznick from Light Reading points out that Comcast leveraged RDK in its X1 hybrid IP video gateways, which have been introduced in all of its markets.
As we look ahead to an industry continually progressing towards all IP service, it’s critical that we realize the key role that RDK adoption will play in the process.
